What causes gum disease?
One of the main causes of gum disease is the plaque that builds up around, on, and between your teeth. If it is not removed by regular brushing and flossing it can irritate your gums, causing them to become red and swollen, and they may bleed when you brush your teeth. This stage of gum disease is called gingivitis. If these early signs of gum disease are not treated, then it can eventually progress to one of the most serious forms of gum disease, periodontitis, which is irreversible and can lead to tooth loss.

Why do I have bad breath?
Bad breath happens for a number of reasons. Among these reasons is a build-up of plaque on your teeth, gums, and tongue. When plaque bacteria break down pieces of food in your mouth, it releases an unpleasant smelling gas that contributes to bad breath. However, it’s important to remember that plaque is just one of many potential causes of bad breath, so make sure to speak to your dentist if you have any concerns.
